South Dakota administrative rules allow for a licensed registered nurse to delegate administration of medications via established gastrostomy or jejunostomy tubes to a home and community-based services employee who has completed med aide training and demonstrated ability or proficiency with med administration. This course provides general information regarding basic types of feeding tubes and the steps for feeding tube care. The course includes a handout and a series of competency checklists for the nurse to conduct with the student who will demonstrate knowledge in identifying how to manage common feeding tube problems, to discuss complications and know when to contact the nurse.
